QUINTO MARTINI AT THE HERMITAGE MUSEUM : AN EXHIBITION OF SCULPTURES AND PAINTINGS OF THE ARTIST, AND ENTRY OF FIVE OF HIS SCULPTURES IN THE PERMANENT COLLECTION OF THE MUSEUM


Museo Hermitage - Quinto Martini

Return to Russia, where they were exhibited on several occasions in the context of temporary exhibitions, the masterpieces of Quinto Martini and this time they will remain there.

From May 24, 2013, the Hermitage Museum of San Petersburg has hosted a retrospective of sculptures and paintings of Quinto Martini, reflecting the richness of expression that accompanied the entire life of the artist. Five awe-inspiring sculptures of the Tuscan artist (Alcea, Nature, The Rain, Beggar, and The Rooster) has remained in Russia becoming part of the permanent collection of the State Hermitage Museum which, thanks to the acquisition of the magnificent general staff building, adjacent to the its historical site, has become the largest museum in the world.

The inauguration of the exhibition dedicated to the artist, originally scheduled to last until June 30 but then continued until 22 July thanks to the great success of public and critics, was organized in collaboration with the Association "Friends of the Hermitage (Italy)" [www.amiciermitage.it]. The event was sponsored by the Italian Embassy in Moscow, the Department of St. Petersburg, the Consulate General of Italy in St. Petersburg, the Tuscany Region, the Province of Prato, the City of Florence, and the City of Carmignano. Main sponsor of the event was Banca Intesa Russia; other banks and associations also sponsored.

The opening ceremony, presided over by the Consul General of Italy in St. Petersburg Mr. Luigi Estero, was preceded by a lecture of Prof. Marco Ciatti, Superintendent of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure of Florence, along with the Director and the Technical Director of the Sector on Restoration of Bronzes and Ancient Weapons of the important Italian institution, who illustrated the restorations carried out by the Opificio on some bronze statues of the artist hosted at the Museum-Park Quinto Martini.

The five sculptures of Quinto Martini that have entered the collection of the Hermitage Museum, are placed in the rooms of the Palace in the context of an impressive permanent exhibition dedicated to the best of Western sculpture of the twentieth century.

Prof. Sergey Androsov, one of the world's leading experts of Italian sculpture and Director of the Department of Western European Art of the Hermitage Museum, choose the five masterpieces in autumn 2012 when he visited the House-Studio and the Museum-Park dedicated to the artist in Seano (Municipality of Carmignano – Province of Prato) where significant creations of the artist are collected.

The exhibition was accompanied by a catalog in Italian and Russian edited by Consuelo de Gara, with presentations of H.E. the Italian Ambassador to Moscow Antonio Zanardi Landi, the Mayor of Carmignano Doriano Cirri, the Chairman of Banca Intesa Russia Antonio Fallico, and essays by the Director Sergey Androsov, and by the critics Tomaso Montanari and Marco Fagioli.
